Mark R. Pattis is Chairman of Next Chapter Holdings, located in Highland Park, Illinois. Next Chapter Holdings is the entity which manages Pattis family investments.

Mr. Pattis joined National Textbook Company (NTC) in 1978 and served in various capacities including that of Publisher and CEO at the time the firm was acquired by Tribune Company. From March 1996 when Tribune Company purchased NTC until June 1999, Mr. Pattis served as President and Chief Executive Officer of NTC/Contemporary Publishing Group. Under his leadership, NTC/Contemporary grew to become one of the ten largest supplementary educational publishers in the country and one of the nation’s top 20 publishers of consumer trade books; the company produced approximately 1000 new titles annually with a full-time staff of 425. From June 1999 until his resignation in March 2000, Mr. Pattis served as Chairman of NTC/Contemporary Publishing Group. Subsequently, in June 2000, Tribune sold its education businesses, including NTC/Contemporary, to McGraw-Hill.

Prior to joining National Textbook Company, Mr. Pattis held positions at The Chase Manhattan Bank, The American National Bank and The Marmon Group. A native of Chicago, Mr. Pattis earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in economics from Swarthmore College. He continued graduate studies at the University of Chicago, the London School of Economics, and the Sorbonne. He speaks French and Spanish. In 1993, Mr. Pattis received the Palmes Académiques from the French government for his contribution to French language education, and in 1994, the Sony Electronic Book Award of Excellence for his contribution to electronic book publishing.

From 2004 through 2011, Mr. Pattis served as a member of the Investment Committee of the Swarthmore College Endowment and from 2008-2011 as Chairman of the Real Assets subcommittee. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Book Clinic. He served as Co-Chairman of the United States Electronic Book Publishing Committee from 1991 to 1995. From 1995 to 2000, he served as Vice Chairman of the Multimedia and Electronic Book International Committee (MEBIC) as well as the U.S. delegate to the International Group of Educational Publishers (IGEP). In 1999 and 2000, Mr. Pattis served as Chairman of IGEP.

Mr. Pattis resides in Highland Park, Illinois and Asheville, North Carolina with his wife, Lisa J. Pattis.
